Micro payments are not dead

Most of you pre-launchers probably have no idea what that title means. That’s okay, because all that matters is that you’ve inspired it.

You see, “micro payments” was a concept embraced by the respected cartoonist, Scott McCloud, and advertised as a way to provide online cartoonists with a form of steady income. The idea was simple: If everybody who visits a webcomic pays a tiny fee of, say, a few pennies, then the net outcome is enough to support the cartoonist.

Unfortunately, as many in the webcomic world have found, people don’t want to pay for something they can get for free. And unless you’re an established cartoonist, charging people admission to a site would virtually end your web traffic.

So what’s the answer? Hint: It’s right under your nose. In fact, it’s so obvious I can’t believe I haven’t heard it mentioned before.

But I’m not going to tell you what it is yet. Not until it’s been fully tested. And that, my friends, will only happen after Back 2 Basics is launched at the end of October.

Until then, think about what I’ve said. Making money on webcomics is not a fantasy. It is very, very possible. Just think a little out of the box (by the way, that’s another hint).

Ciao,
Matt
